About this siteABOUT
SAMURAI JOURNAL profiles the people, creators and brands who set out from Japan and forged their own path on the world stage, the modern samurai, through research and analysis grounded in primary sources.
By "modern samurai" we do not mean people with swords. We mean people, creators and brands who mastered their craft and took it from Japan to the world stage, and left a mark there.
Editorial policy
- We favor primary sources such as official records, statements by the people involved, industry statistics and academic work, and cross-check them against each other.
- Claims in the text carry numbered notes that link to the source list at the end of each article.
- Superlatives such as "first" or "most" always carry a source. When a popular story cannot be verified, we say so.
- Facts and our own analysis are set apart visually. We cover limits and criticism as well as achievements.
- Before publication, someone other than the writer checks every cited claim against its source.
About the images
We use freely licensed photos from Wikimedia Commons, materials officially provided by rights holders, and photos and illustrations from Pixabay, and show the source under each image. The background art at the top of the page is a Pixabay illustration (AI-generated), shown in black and white.
Articles are written in Japanese and translated into each language with AI. Before publication, each translation is checked by machine to make sure it keeps the same notes, images and tables as the original. Source titles are listed in their original language.
